Michelle Schwegmann and Josh Hooten founded Herbivore, a T-shirt design company, in 2002 and opened a retail store in 2006. In 2007 they were one of four businesses that established Portland's vegan mini-mall. From publishing books and magazines (including the vegan lifestyle magazine Herbivore from 2003 to 2007) to organizing and attending animal rights and vegetarian conferences and festivals nationwide, they have played a vital role in helping to expand the animal rights movement.
