On the night of March 16, 2003 members of a Milan antifascist social center were leaving a club when they were ambushed, stabbed and beaten by three neo-fascists. The police responded by beating up the antifascists, preventing immediate medical attention for those injured, resulting in the death of Davide "Dax" Cesare. Friends were later viciously beaten by the police as they waited for news of their injured comrades. Later, the police actions were variously defended and covered up, their excessive force blamed on the antifascists. There was a huge outcry in Italy and popular protest.
