ITEM OVERVIEW
First published in 1990, and based on the author's four years of teaching at the Palestinian University Of Birzeit in the occupied West Bank, and extensive interviews, Warnock demonstrates that the history of women's participation in the Palestinian national movement goes back to the beginning of the century and has gone hand in hand with profound changes in economic and social life. She shows how women have responded to the opportunities presented by these changes, as well as to the setbacks of the military occupation, in ways that are active, individual and complex. Through interviews with women of all ages and social backgrounds, from grandmothers who grew up under the restrictions of traditional village life to educated young fighters, this book examines various key areas - agriculture, education, political action, expectations of marriage, religious and social ideologies - and reveals the different ways in which women see themselves, their experiences, and their place in the Palestine of the future.
